Away We Go...
With over 100 Furniture Girls shows in the books and nearing the end of our best year yet -- seriously, in 2011 we've had more fun with more people in more cities than ever before -- we've decided it's time to take a break and get to work... on our next album.

We've got just two local shows left on our current schedule: November 12th at the High Dive (a benefit for the Humane Society) and then November 18th, we're wrapping up 2011 at the Blue Moon Tavern with one of our favorite bands, The Quick and Easy Boys!

After that, we're locking ourselves in Contactcreate's StudioNorth for a couple months to write and record the follow-up to last year's How I Learned to Crawl, the debut album we’ve put on sale for 50% off on Bandcamp and CD Baby. While we’re away we’ll be adding a whole bunch of video from this year’s shows to our YouTube page and posting a few sounds from the studio.

Look for us to start playing shows again early next year.

Furniture Girls at SXSW: It's About the Music
We love music. We love listening to it, talking about it and (most of all) playing it. So when we were sitting in our hotel room the day after a show last weekend talking about whether or not we should drop everything next month and head to the biggest music festival in the country – South by Southwest in Austin, TX – the decision was simple: WE’RE GOING.

We’re going to find out what other independent artists from around the country and around the world are up to. We’re going to tell them about Furniture Girls and what we’re up to. We’re going to support the bands from our hometown that are performing there this year. We’re going to find out what it’s like to spend a week surrounded by (literally) thousands of amazing artists and bands we've never seen or heard before. We’re going – because we love music.

Our Year-End List
About this time every year, local radio stations and music blogs begin to publish their "Best [Albums, Bands and/or Shows] of 2010" lists. For one reason or another, though, there's usually quite a bit of overlap on their respective lists (i.e. you'll see the same bands on more than one list), so a lot of bands who made great music this year won't get the recognition they deserve. Since we were fortunate enough to play over two dozen(!) shows this year, we had front row seats for a LOT of great performances. And so, with gratitude and respect to every group we played with over the last 12 months, here's our rundown of...

The Best Bands We Played With In 2010:

Darrius Willrich
Thaddillac
Reji Lefluer
Aaron Daniel
Big High
Supermassive
Alabaster
The Redwood Plan
The Beats, Man
Quitzow
The Missionary Position
Surrealized
Black Cherry Crush
Choklate

The CD Release!!
(Just like Ron Burgundy, it's kind of a big deal. :) Our first album comes out August 31st and we're throwing a HUGE party at The Crocodile on September 2nd to celebrate, but there's a lot more happening between now and then!

CD Release Month: More fun than we've ever had. Ever.

Summer in Seattle is pretty awesome to begin with, but when you throw in the August 31st release of a debut album that's the product of years – literally, YEARS! – of hard work, time and effort by everyone in this band (with the help of Michael Cozzi and countless others), well... can it get much better?

How I Learned to Crawl is a 100% independent release; there are no corporate money men behind the scenes, just US. We're producing, distributing and selling the whole thing ourselves, on our own record label, which is a lot of work, but it's also a LOT of fun. We'll be playing four shows in four different cities next month to get the word out about the album, but the week-long CD release party starts on Thursday, August 26th...

That night, we're teaming up with DrinkGal.com to host a sneak preview CD listening party at The Nabob Bar in Seattle – the first chance for everyone (who's over 21 ;) to hear the whole album from start to finish! Plus, everyone who drops by that night will have a chance to pick up a signed, pre-release copy of How I Learned to Crawl, as well as a limited-edition Furniture Girls t-shirt!

Oh, and did we mention that we'll also have a collection of Furniture Girls-themed cocktails designed by Jackie Moffett, the Drink Gal herself? And that if you bring your ticket to the CD release party, you can get that signed copy of the album for just ten bucks?!

Seriously, summer doesn't get much better than this.

What do you hear?
"What does your band sound like?" "How would you categorize your band?"

These kinds of questions are what the majority of bands I know dread most. Personally, I don’t like telling people what I think we are like because that limits peoples’ abilities to form their own opinions. I also find it a difficult question to answer when you’re just doing your thing and not aiming for a formula. Not knocking those bands that successfully plan their sound around a formula, I’m just saying that’s not how I work. Sure, you can list your influences, but does that really accurately describe your sound? Probably not.

Unfortunately, it’s a necessary evil that we face when trying to get booked at clubs, festivals, airplay, etc. They need to know where to put you. So you try to come up with some vague, ambiguous category that hopefully won’t get too overwhelmingly sub-genred out. It’s my least favorite thing, to be honest. But since it’s something you can’t get away from, lately I’ve been trying to have a little fun with it.

You can’t get too glib with industry folk, but with the average concert-goer - I think it’s totally ok to play around a little. At the bar after our set at Hayley’s in Everett, a nice guy named Evan began the conversation, “How would you categorize your band?” Not wanting to be a smartass, but genuinely not wanting to answer the question, I threw it back at him - "How would you?" "Goth R&B," he said. I really got a kick out of his answer and it created in me a need to find out what other folks think. We played Jazzbones in Tacoma recently and I was told we sounded like, "Paramore meets Hole meets The Cranberries." In the past, we’ve heard “My Bloody Valentine meets Throwing Muses” and “Siouxsie meets Prince”. While some comparisons leave me scratching my head a bit, I love them all. I find it really entertaining and somewhat insightful.

So… this opens the discussion. I want to know from all of you – how would YOU describe our sound? What bands do we remind YOU of? Remember – there are no wrong answers & no comparisons too weird. Ready? And... GO!!!

Thank you,
~Butterfly Hambone (aka ms. stayC)

FIFTY. At the end of our "Double Shot" weekend shows on March 26th (Scarlet Tree) and March 28th (Sunset Tavern), that's how many shows the five of us, Furniture Girls, will have played together. In honor of this super cool temporal milestone, we're getting freaky at these next two shows: part of each set will be acoustic! It'll be awesome. Fifty shows' worth of awesome.

Big news! On the heels of last week's radio interview, we're pleased to announce that our EP is now for sale at Easy Street Records! If you find yourself in Seattle, you'll find our music at both the Mercer St. and West Seattle locations.

We're delighted (and honestly a little shocked) to report that we, Furniture Girls, just finished our very first radio interview... ever. We loved it. And it all came together so fast we didn't really know what was happening until it was all over – Bubba let us all know that the opportunity was there late last week and we quickly coordinated it around everyone's holiday plans and stayC's gig in Chicago (w/Alabaster) and then we made it happen at 5:45 this morning. It was a great time and a ton of fun.

Big (read: HUGE, SUPER-SIZED) thanks to Julie Mains and Jennifer Austin, co-hosts of The Menage on KKNW 1150AM (Seattle) for having us on!

Pwoduct testing. Pwoduct testing is what bwings us togeva today. Some might view it as cheese to sport one's own gear, but really... how can you get behind something you've never tried out? So I ordered my own band's sweatshirt (zip hoodie) to check out the process & see the quality of the merch. A word about the process: easy. I paid a little extra to get my hoodie within a week & actually got it in a few days. Nice. About the hoodie: comfy cozy! It is pretty true to size - I ordered the size I expected would fit me, and it did. In closing, way to go Café Press. Y'all are jamalamin'!

I've fallen in love. I've fallen head over heels in love - probably for the first time in a long time.. maybe ever… with a radio station. I think it's only an online/streaming thing, but still (outta LA, CA). the format is, well… I'll paste info below & links & you can see for yourself. but the eclectic weird ass mix of everything from honky-tonk, rockabilly, old-time stuff, 80's stuff, random weirdness… it's all stuff I love!

Man, I effin' love this station. and they play unedited stuff too (really dirty sometimes) so no need to filter anything. jeez- they just went from some chick from the 30's singin' 'bout balls… to my boy Patton's Tomahawk … to the B-52's. oh, snap. now they're playing that song that came on at the end of 16 candles when Samantha gets her b-day cake & kiss from Jake. did I mention I LOVE THIS STATION!!!

Take a sec to listen to Devil's Night Radio.
